I should probably try first but do you know if this will work on Linux Mint 19

Do not bother. This repo is messed up, among other things it changes the bookmark folder used by nemo to blabla/luke/Pictures , Videos, etc... 'luke' ! who's luke? not me, not my user, so nemo was showing an error in the bookmarks. It does not even isntall properly some of the programs it pretends to. There is a typo in i3status that reads as i3staus. don't bother

You can edit the autoinstall script so you only install the core tho, that works, just make sure to edit the /core/000_i3_plain.sh file because it says "i3staus" and should say "i3status"

Also install compton, feh and lxappearance, and run this one: https://github.com/PhalanxHead/i3-gaps_MintInstaller/blob/master/UItweakApps/110_i3_Tweaks_conf.sh

That will give you a basic, working, i3-gaps system.

Afterwards check and modify to your liking the file at ~/.config/i3/config
You can search for configs online or read i3 docs.
