Idea: Hexen cinematics from PS1 #200
Comments
Oops, like likes I've forgot to reply! In general, I like this idea to have some optional extra content. But there are three problems:
I think I'll just keep this idea for better times. :) Hexen update is under way, but still, I don't see any ways to make language swapping w/o program restart. Once |
I think it's better for the user to follow instructions on how to extract the files themselves in a specific format with tools like jPSXdec, and using their own PS1 Hexen CD or ISO. I don't think Russian Hexen should do this. I guess Russian Hexen should only try and see if the user has put the movies in the designated folder and in the correct format, but aside from that, it should only know what movie to play. About how to add subtitles, I have no idea how would that be done. I think there's no Russian version of PS1 Hexen. |
You won't believe it, but the Russian version of Hexen for PS1 exists :) (but from the pirates - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JivpkiCPtGs& ) |
That's the moment when I really wish @hfc2x can't understand translated speech and read translated characters. They are just awful... Nintendo 64 version, however, offered French, German, and Japanese official translations. |
Eh, there's a reason I said there's no Russian version of Hexen, because I don't think this qualifies as one. Besides, I wasn't talking about unofficial or pirated versions here, because that's completely out of scope as far as providing game data for a source port to function (and besides it's copyrighted material, therefore not freely-distributable). For the intents and purposes of the original suggestion, it's assumed the user should provide their own legally-obtained copy of the game's data, like it's the case with any Doom source port or related.
Well, I don't understand Russian but I actually had a chuckle with the terrible quality of the audio lol. |
Hello again.
I had an idea proposal, although if it's too much trouble to implement, or it's too out of scope for this project, then this can be completely ignored.
I was thinking that the cinematics from the PS1 version of Hexen could play through Russian Hexen, if the user provides them. This could work similarly to how intro movies play in Strife: Veteran Edition, by loading the provided movie files in a specific format inside a /movies folder. SVE uses FFmpeg for movie playback.
There exists an open source tool for decoding and converting PS1 movie files called jPSXdec that could be used for extracting the movies from the disc.
The movies (if provided) could play like they do in the PS1 version: the intro movie plays after the first "loading" screen, and before the game shows the TITLE graphic; and the rest of the movies play as replacement to the end-of-hub text screens. If one movie is missing, the game should instead just show the text screen.
Don't worry about rejecting this if it's a terrible idea lol.
