How to customize portfolio entries?

I renamed "portfolio" to "software" in the _config.yml and elsewhere. Now I am trying to modify the default entries/add more, but then none of the entries show up on the website. I didn't even add any new fields beyond those in the template. What am I missing? What's required with portfolio entries to render them?

Here's the default portfolio-1.md:

 ---
title: "portfolio item number 1"
excerpt: "Short description of portfolio item number 1<br/><img src='/images/500x300.png'>"
collection: portfolio
---

This is an item in your portfolio. It can be have images or nice text. If you name the file .md, it will be parsed as markdown. If you name the file .html, it will be parsed as HTML. 

I tried to modify it to:

Determine the largest circle in a 2D convex hull. Originally developed to provide a sense of scale of the center of mass distance from the edges of base of support during human balance studies.

Just kidding, my problem was the double quotes in the link in the excerpt.
