events/hook plugin: can I modify {destination}?

Can I call a method on destination, or pass destination to an external script somehow? I want to basename it.

A couple of ideas come to mind:

You could use the inline plugin to call Python's os.basename, defining a new field that you use here.

Or, you could use the shell. Something like:

`basename {path}`

I can't get it to work, neither with backticks, $() or a defined inline field that works everywhere else.

Unfortunately, different beets plugins use different methods to format command lines, so most of these are not expected to work. In particular, the hook plugin uses plain string formatting, and the command line is not passed through a shell.

Can't work, since no shell is involved.

command: echo "NEW $base_name"
Output:

NEW $base_name

Can't work, since hook doesn't use template functions, but only braces {} for string formatting.

command: echo "NEW base_name"

NEW base_name

No substitutions here.

command: echo "NEW $(basename {destination})"
Output:

NEW $(basename /mnt/music8/+TAGGED/+test/E/Eminem/Eminem │2011│ Space Bound CDS [MP3]/01 Space Bound (Clean).mp3)

No shell.

I guess that base_name is the inline field you mention? I think the following should work to access it:

command: echo "NEW {item.base_name}" `

However, for the item_moved hook, I think you can't really get the destination in this way, since it has not been saved to the item yet when the hook is called.
