<s n="2274426"><lb n="558"/> To her[τῇ], <add>I</add> think[I:ὀΐω] <add>that</add> you[σ'] actually[ἐτήτυμον] nodded in approval[κατανεῦσαι] so that[ὡς]  <lb n="559"/> <add>you</add> would show respect to[you-sg:τιμήσῃς] Achilles[Ἀχιλῆα], and[δὲ] <add>you</add> would destroy[you-sg:ὀλέσῃς] many[πολέας] of <add>the</add> Achaeans[of:Ἀχαιῶν] beside[ἐπὶ] <add>the</add> ships[νηυσὶν].”</s>

<s n="2274434"><lb n="570"/> Throughout[ἀνὰ] <add>the</add> house[δῶμα] of Zeus[Διὸς] <add>the</add> heavenly[Οὐρανίωνες] gods[θεοὶ] were made upset[they:ὄχθησαν].</s>
<s n="2274435"><lb n="571"/> Among them[τοῖσιν] [δ'] Hephaestus[Ἥφαιστος], celebrated for his ability to make things[κλυτοτέχνης], began[he:ἦρχ'] to speak to the group[ἀγορεύειν] <lb n="572"/> conveying[φέρων] pleasing things[ἐπίηρα] to <add>his</add> beloved[φίλῃ] mother[μητρὶ], white-armed[λευκωλένῳ] Hera[Ἥρῃ]:</s>
<s n="2274436"><lb n="573"/>“Without a doubt[ἦ] [δὴ] these[τάδ'] deeds[ἔργα] will be[it-collective:ἔσσεται] destructive[λοίγια], and[δ'] <add>they</add> will[ἔσσεται] not[οὐ] be[it-collective:ἔσσεται] tolerable[ἀνεκτά] any longer[ἔτ'] <lb n="574"/> if[εἰ] [δὴ] you two[σφὼ] quarrel[you-dual:ἐριδαίνετον] in this way[ὧδε] because of[ἕνεκα] mortals[θνητῶν]  <lb n="575"/> and[δὲ] stir up[you-dual:ἐλαύνετον] a brawl[κολῳὸν] among[ἐν] <add>the</add> gods[θεοῖσι].</s>
<s n="2274437">Nor[οὐ δέ] will there be[it:ἔσσεται] any[τι]  <lb n="576"/> enjoyment[ἦδος] of <add>this</add> good[of:ἐσθλῆς] feast[δαιτὸς], since[ἐπεὶ] the[τὰ] worse[χερείονα] win[it-collective:νικᾷ].</s>
<s n="2274438"><lb n="577"/> To[παράφημι] <add>my</add> mother[μητρὶ] I for my part[ἐγὼ] give this advice[I:παράφημι] [δ'], even[καὶ] though[περ] <add>she</add> can think[νοεούσῃ] for herself[αὐτῇ]:  <lb n="578"/> to convey[φέρειν] pleasing things[ἐπίηρα] to <add>my</add> beloved[φίλῳ] father[πατρὶ] Zeus[Διί], so that[ὄφρα] <lb n="579"/> <add>my</add> father[πατήρ] would[νεικείῃσι] not[μὴ] fight[he would:νεικείῃσι] again[αὖτε] and[δ'] disturb[he would:ταράξῃ] <add>the</add> feast[δαῖτα] along with[σὺν] us[ἡμῖν].</s>
<s n="2274439"><lb n="580"/> For[γάρ] there is indeed the possibility that[εἴ περ] <add>the</add> Olympian[Ὀλύμπιος] of lightning[ἀστεροπητὴς] would choose[he:κ' ἐθέλῃσιν]  <lb n="581"/> to shove[στυφελίξαι] <add>us</add> out of[ἐξ] <add>our</add> seats[ἑδέων].</s>
<s n="2274440"> That one[ὃ], as we all know[γὰρ], is[he:ἐστιν] the one who can generate the most force[φέρτατός] by far[πολὺ].</s>
<s n="2274441"><lb n="582"/> Instead[ἀλλὰ], you on your end[σὺ], addressing[you-sg:καθάπτεσθαι] that man[τὸν] with soft[μαλακοῖσιν] words[with:ἐπέεσσι].</s>
<s n="2274442"><lb n="583"/> Immediately[αὐτίκ'] then[ἔπειθ'] <add>the</add> Olympian[Ὀλύμπιος] will be[he:ἔσσεται] gracious[ἵλαος] to us[ἡμῖν].”</s>
<s n="2274443"><lb n="584"/> <add>He</add> spoke[he:ἔφη] [ἄρ'] thus[ὣς].</s>
<s n="2274443a">And[καὶ], having lept up[ἀναΐξας],  <lb n="585"/> <add>he</add> placed[he:τίθει] <add>a</add> two-handled[ἀμφικύπελλον] cup[δέπας] in[ἐν] <add>his</add> dear[φίλῃ] mother’s[μητρὶ] hand[χειρὶ].</s>
<s n="2274443b">And[καί] <add>he</add> spoke to[he:προσέειπε] her[μιν]:</s>
<s n="2274444"><lb n="586"/>“Be strong[(2nd sg imperative)you-sg:τέτλαθι], my[ἐμή] mother[μῆτερ].</s>
<s n="2274444a">And[καὶ] hold yourself up[(2nd sg imperative)you-sg:ἀνάσχεο], although[περ] being troubled[κηδομένη], <lb n="587"/> lest[μή] <add>I</add> may see[I:ἴδωμαι] in[ἐν] <add>my</add> eyes[ὀφθαλμοῖσιν] you[σε], beloved[φίλην] as you are[περ] ,  <lb n="588"/> being beaten[θεινομένην].</s>
<s n="2274444b">And[δ'] then[τότε] <add>I</add> will not[οὔ] be able[I:δυνήσομαι], though[περ] stricken with pain[ἀχνύμενός], <lb n="589"/> to offer protection[χραισμεῖν] in any way[τι].</s>
<s n="2274445">As you know[γὰρ], <add>the</add> Olympian[Ὀλύμπιος] <add>is</add> very hard[ἀργαλέος] to set oneself against[ἀντιφέρεσθαι].</s>
<s n="2274446"><lb n="590"/> For[γάρ] before now[ἤδη], also[καὶ] at another time[ἄλλοτ'] as <add>I</add> was attempting[μεμαῶτα] to defend[ἀλεξέμεναι] <add>you</add>, <lb n="591"/> <add>he</add> flung[he:ῥῖψε] me[με], having seized[τεταγὼν] <add>my</add> foot[ποδὸς], down from[ἀπὸ] <add>the</add> divine[θεσπεσίοιο] threshold[βηλοῦ].</s>
<s n="2274446a"><lb n="592"/> <add>Throughout</add> <add>the</add> entire[πᾶν] day[ἦμαρ] <add>I</add> was propelled[I:φερόμην].</s>
<s n="2274446b">Along with[ἅμα] [δ'] <add>the</add> setting[καταδύντι] sun[ἠελίῳ] <lb n="593"/> <add>I</add> ended my downward fall[I:κάππεσον] on[ἐν] Lemnos[Λήμνῳ].</s>
<s n="2274446c">But[δ'] still[ἔτι] a little[ὀλίγος] spirit[θυμὸς] was still present within[it:ἐνῆεν].</s>
<s n="2274447"><lb n="594"/> There[ἔνθά] <add>the</add> Sintian[Σίντιες] men[ἄνδρες]  straight away[ἄφαρ] took care of[they:κομίσαντο] me[με], after having fallen[πεσόντα].” </s>

<s n="2274448a">And[δὲ]  white-armed[λευκώλενος] goddess[θεὰ] Hera[Ἥρη] smiled[she:μείδησεν].</s>
<s n="2274448b"><lb n="596"/> And[δὲ], after having smiled[μειδήσασα], <add>she</add> accepted[she:ἐδέξατο] from[παιδὸς] <add>her</add> child[παιδὸς] <add>the</add> cup[κύπελλον] in[χειρὶ] <add>her</add> hand[χειρὶ].</s>

<s n="2274452"><lb n="605"/> And then[αὐτὰρ], after[ἐπεὶ] <add>the</add> shining[λαμπρὸν] light[φάος] of <add>the</add> sun[of:ἠελίοιο] sank down[it:κατέδυ], <lb n="606"/> the rest of them[οἳ] [μὲν] each[ἕκαστος] went[they:ἔβαν] to[δὲ] <add>their</add> home[οἶκον] in order to lie down[κακκείοντες] , <lb n="607"/> where[ἧχι] for each[ἑκάστῳ] <add>the</add> widely-renowned[περικλυτὸς] <add>and</add> crippled in both feet[ἀμφιγυήεις] <lb n="608"/> Hephaestus[Ἥφαιστος] made[he:ποίησεν] <add>a</add> house[δῶμα], with <add>his</add> knowing[ἰδυίῃσι] mind[with:πραπίδεσσι].</s>
