Connecting to AP with password doesn't work

Whenever the command wifi connect <ssid> passwd='<password>' is executed, nothing happens.
It seems to me that the connect function doesn't do anything unless the passwd parameter is empty. This works for known APs, i.e. APs whose password has been stored. But connecting to a new AP for the first time is not possible.
