M4 Pro isn't able to set the same custom resolution (3424 x 1926, HiDPi) as my M1 Pro

I've just recently upgraded to a M4 Pro, and noticed I cannot set the same settings I previously had on my M1 Pro for scaling.

The M1 Pro had 3424 x 1926 HiDPi at all available refresh rates (VRR, 120, 144, etc).

Currently on My M4 Pro with the same exact settings, I can do native resolution of 3840 x 2160, or the next HiDPi of 3360 x 1890.

Everything between that has disappeared.

This is what it looks like on the new MBP M4:

Compared to my M1 Pro:

Both using the same DisplayPort to USB-C cable, running MacOS 15.2, tested on DP 1.4 and 1.4 DCC

Yes, the M4/M4 Pro seems to behave in a more limited manner. See these forums about it but there are many posts on Reddit too. Hopefully Apple will improve this.

Try creating a Virtual Screen with your desired Resolution.

Then go to System Settings > Displays and replicate as such:

This allow me to dial in my LG 5k/2k Ultrawide with a sharp image just like I have on my M1 MacBook Pro.

I just got off the phone with Apple support and they escalated a ticket to engineering, so hopefully it gets resolved.

I'll try this as a work around, only downside is having to use 60hz vs 144/120 but that's better than nothing. Thanks!

Is this a hardware issue or a Sequoia issue? On an M2 Pro on Sonoma I use 3840x1620 HiDPi. I am currently testing an M4 Max and cannot set a resolution past 3360x1418.

Well I just updated my M2 to Sequoia and don't have the issue. @Goodgrapes this works but it screws up my color profile.

I’d assume it’s a software issue impacting M4’s. Surely an M4 Pro has the power. Then again, I also had issues with my M1 Pro until I installed Better Display. So hopefully an update soon to fix this (rather small but annoying) issue
