WikiDocumentationAdministrator DocumentationGetting or choosing a server

Buoy is software that adds community-based crisis response tools to existing websites. That means you need an existing website to make use of Buoy. This guide discusses considerations for getting or choosing a server that can run the Buoy software.

What is a server?

When we say "server," what we mean is simply a computer that is never (or rarely) powered down and is always connected to the Internet. These can be:

  • A computer running in your closet at home that you never turn off.
  • An account with a Web hosting or cloud server company that you pay for.
  • A free account on a self-hosting service such as Sandstorm Oasis.

Server requirements

Since Buoy is a WordPress plugin, you need to ensure your server can run WordPress in addition to Buoy.

  1. Check that your server meets WordPress's minimum requirements.
  2. Check that your WordPress install meets Buoy's minimum requirements (look for the "Requires" line in the right-hand sidebar).
  3. Ensure your server can make both outbound HTTP (Web) and SMTP (Email) connections.
