We want to create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for the contest. Here is quick list of requirements we want to accomplish during the hackathon.

Project Goals

  • Fun to build
  • Fun to use
  • Potential to provide useful citizen feedback to Reno government
  • Potential to involve citizens and organizations in civic activites

The Idea

Rather than submitting "non-emergency service requests", maybe we could let people submit something a little more open-ended and playful: "something that should be done here".

We could collect at minimum a proposal

  • what should be done
  • where it should be done
  • who should do it
  • (optional) before picture

Which could become a plan

  • when it should be done
  • (maybe) eventbrite or similar hook

Or eventually a feat or flop, when the time has passed. We could have a leaderboard for each.

  • (optional) after picture
  • (optional) review

The hackathon itself could be a submission.

Components

Website (Wordpress)

  • Map of Reno with geolocation data mashed up with Reno ideas
  • A way for logged in or anonymous users to add ideas to the map

Mobile clients (iPhone/andriod)

  • Get idea data and submit it to website
  • Display map with list of ideas
  • Submit ideas via Tropo via SMS or by phone

This is our wish list if we have time.

  • Vote up and down improvements
  • Ideas that are related to grafitti, vandalism, pot holes will be automatically submitted to city of Reno
  • Logged in users can own ideas and get awards for completing them
  • Gamify the website with badges and levels
  • Add social plug-ins for Facebook and Twitter (automatic tweets, Facebook wall posts)
  • Allow people to post comments (This could be helpful if someone spams the site with fake stuff)
  • Windows 7 phone support
  • Mobile website
  • How to video
  • Sample content
