A Torpedo output port is regarded as active if it has patch leads connecting it to one or more input port. There is no mechanism to determine if the connected input ports support Torpedo protocols or not.
A Torpedo input port is regarded as active if it has a patch lead connecting it from an output port. there is no mechanism to determine if the connected output port supports Torpedo protocols, however Layer 5 describes in more detail how the input port recognizes valid messages and distinguishes them from noise or other non-Torpedo signals.
